This exhibition, the first of a series of “Focus” exhibitions at the Israel Museum, shed new light on Peter Paul Rubens’ seminal painting The Death of Adonis (ca. 1614). The Museum’s new “Focus” series, offer opportunities for an in-depth exploration of major works from the Museum’s collection. we designed a ‘triptych’ space that were enclosing the precious piece and provided “depth”, physical and metaphorical, to the accompanying pieces: drawings, preparatory oil sketches, classical sculptures and manuscripts which were brought together to illuminate aspects of Rubens’ special interest in the subject of Venus and Adonis, a result of his readings in Classical literature.
